Ira Nelken
Dr. Nelken, an educational consultant, has been working with and exhibiting watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and pen & ink renderings for the past 40 years. His style incorporates landscape realism with a touch of Japanese influence. His sense of color saturation, tonal values, and contrast of colors, combined with the subtlety of hues in his watercolor and pastel mediums, are highlights of his work.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Nelken has lived in Northern California for most of the last 46 years, residing in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 30. The first 16 years of Ira’s life was spent in a multi-ethnic “concrete jungle”. He attended universities in rural Upstate New York, Central New Jersey, and along the West Coast. Teaching in the Coastal Range of California and in the Sacramento river valley area, has given him a deep appreciation of nature in all its simplicity in stark contrast to urban life.
